NU Asian Magazine | Editor-in-Chief

NU Asian Magazine is Northwestern University’s only East-Asian interest quarterly magazine. It publishes personal essays, reportages of the Asian communities, analysis on recent trends in the community and interviews on notable Asian-Americans on campus and in the Chicagoland area.
I was the magazine’s editor-in-chief from September 2018 to March 2020, leading the publishing of three separate issues on entertainment, food and retro & counterculture. Recognizing that my strength was in editorial side, I actively recruited designers, photographers and writers on campus, creating a close-knit community of 30+ Asian-American student journalists and contributors.
As editor-in-chief, I provided editorial direction on contributors’ story pitches and managed workshops aimed at improving writers’ skills. I wanted the publication to not only function as a creative space for students with various Asian-American experience but also hold itself to highest standards, spending hundreds of hours in each issue.
I was also one of its key writers in my sophomore year, writing two cover stories on the Vietnamese American community in Uptown, Chicago and on the 20th anniversary of the series hunger strikes that led to Asian-American studies department at Northwestern.
