Book Journalism (북저널리즘) | Editor

In June 2020, I joined Book Journalism. It was two months after I moved back to my home city, Seoul after the deadly COVID-19 outbreak started.
This media startup attracted me for two reasons. First, the founders were heavily interested in providing essential context and analysis to the noise of 24-hour news cycle. Second, they recently started daily news reporting, so I thought I would have more to contribute and also build a portfolio.
As an editor in Book Journalism, I wasn’t always expected to write stories on my own. For the original long forms and some features, the editors’ job was to look for the right expert who’s willing to write for us. It was our job to come up with the right author for a story pitch. For example, the story on Silicon Valley giants’ heavy funding on academia is an edited and translated version of a peer-reviewed article from an AI ethics researcher. It is also the case for printed short books around 120-140 pages. I pitched the story, found the suitable author and suggested them they work with Book Journalism.
Other times, I wrote features, news articles and interviews. There was minimal original reporting done for daily news articles, but I asked to jam in all the essential context and analysis required to fully understand the day’s most important news.
Below are a number of selected works from my time in Book Journalism.
